For our November short story contest, we are asking for holiday recipes. This is a special prompt because we’re not asking for just any old type of story, but one in the form of a recipe. We want to you to capture your idea of a holiday – any holiday – in the form of food. Tell us what sorts of ingredients you’d include in the perfect Thanksgiving interaction. Or give us the instructions for making the perfect Valentine’s date.
Bake your recipes until the deadline – Nov. 22, 2019 – and then we’ll announce the best tasting dishes by Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Prizes include a writer themed apron (1st place), a cookbook (2nd place), and some fuzzy, fun socks (3rd place).
Here’s a basic example of what we’re looking for:
Trickers’ Treats
A Halloween Recipe
Ingredients:
-
- King-sized chocolate bars
- Lots of fake cobwebs
- 5-7 fake tombstones (depending on size of yard)
- Orange spotlight
- Extension cord
- Optional: A reputation as the house with the big candy
Instructions:
One to two weeks before October 31, set up the tombstones and cobwebs throughout the yard. These are the bare minimum for decorations – feel free to add more. The spotlight can also be set up at this time, however, it may have a stronger effect if set up the day of. Set the spotlight to rotate or flash and add any further decorations.
When 6 p.m. hits, you should prepare the candy bowl. (This is for the young children who can’t stay up late. You may want to consider giving them smaller pieces.) When 8 p.m rolls around, break out the big candy. You’ll get the most tricker-treaters in the neighborhood.
